Of course I clicked on a few links to see what they were teaching and if it made sense for me. The courses they promoted would show me how I could travel the world and get paid big money to speak at important events. But my goal wasn't to be on the road 300 days a year... Or spend countless hours in airports, airplanes, and hotels.
I had a husband and kids at home. It was ok to leave occasionally, but I wanted to be home more than I was gone. I was more interested in speaking within a 2-4 hour radius than traveling all over the country. Do you relate to this at all?
I envisioned speaking as a viable method of building credibility and rapport quickly. After all, when someone has been invited to speak, we naturally assume they have the credentials and experience needed to talk on a specific topic. So I worked hard and created a talk that emotionally engaged the audience, shared what I did and the results people got through stories, and shared great content. And although people came up to me after and told how great it was and that they were going to call me to set up a free strategy session to create their speaking blueprint, my phone didn't ring.
It's wasn't their fault. It was mine. You see, I forgot that the minute they walked out of the event, they looked at their phone and all the messages that had collected. They immediately jumped back into their already busy lives and forgot about me and my card.
Over the next days and weeks, my card would show up in their stack of "to-do's". It was in the "I'll take care of it later" pile. But later never came. Eventually all the emotion and energy they felt from being in the audience had died. My card ended up in the trash.
This taught me a very valuable lesson - Stop letting others control my income and destiny! I began the arduous task of finding a solution. Through trial and error, lots of tweaks, and minor successes, I finally discovered 3 things that would allow me to get the results I was looking for... consistently and predictably. Here are the 3 things that I added to my "speaking":
- Offer a free piece of content that the audience would find helpful and have the sign up form on the bottom of the handout. I asked them to tear off and turn into me. I entered the contact info and the people who signed up received the content. This method added them to my email list.
- I seeded stories and information from my free content throughout the talk to build interest and desire.
- I wrote an email sequence to follow up with those who opted in for my free content. These emails shared additional information, stories, testimonials, and ask them to buy something.
This is the exact method I use to generate $6,000-$8,000 in sales ($500 product) each and every time I spoke. Most venues that I speak at don't allow selling from the stage, so I came up with an email campaign to do the heavy lifting for me. This takes the pressure off gives me the opportunity to build trust and rapport with my audience.
