As a business professional, my goal was to speak to groups of people and convince them to become one of my new clients.
Sounds like a great plan, right? Imagine a room filled with people listening to the speaker... But guess what? Very few people talked to me after the event and it was very rare if I obtained a new client as a result of speaking.
I didn't get it! I read so many blogs, newsletters, and books about speaking and I thought I was implementing what they taught.
But I missed a key element.
I was talking to "any" audience, not audiences that were my ideal prospects! In other words, I was delivering a message to people that simply didn't care. They didn't relate because they didn't have the problem of my ideal prospects. Obviously, then, they didn't need the solution!
This "lightbulb" moment allowed me to change my tactics. I searched for events that would be filled with my ideal prospects - those who identified with the problems I discussed and be interested in the solutions shared.
This one change seeking speaking opportunities made a significant difference in my results.
Think about the events you want to speak at or be a sponsor for... When you focus on events with your ideal prospects, your results will improve.
