I knew better than to ask Amelia where she wanted to go... she would choose Target. A wise gramma knows better than to take her credit card and granddaughter shopping in a big store like Target during the Christmas season! Especially a granddaughter that loves to shop and buy things!
Her mom (my daughter) loves things that smell nice. I strategically took Amelia to one specific store in the mall so we could be in and out without many distractions...
The saleswoman approached. "How can I help you today?" she asked, looking at both of us.
"My granddaughter is here to buy a present for her mom." I explained. "She's the customer, I'm just the gramma who came along."
The saleswoman smiled warmly at Amelia and asked questions about what she thought her mom would like.
Of course products with glitter caught the attention of this sparkle-loving 7 year old girl!
"These are part of our signature line. They are on sale - buy 3, get 3 free." The saleswoman said. She opened one to let Amelia smell it.
She picked out 6 items and we walked to the register.
"Because you are such a good customer," the salewoman confided softly to Amelia, "I have a $10 off coupon that I'll scan to save a little money. Would that be ok?" Amelia nodded.
In less than 15 minutes, we had purchased products that her mom would love and Amelia was going to love giving. Her smile stretched across her face and she was literally as bright as a lit-up Christmas tree. She had been treated like a person who truly mattered and the feeling made her feel like a very important person.
The saleswoman will long be forgotten but how she made Amelia feel will last a lifetime. Self-esteem in just 15 minutes at the mall!
