Every week I meet women who are uncertain of their future. These women are employees, trading their time, effort, and life, to provide value to their employers in exchange for a paycheck. They hear about companies changing retirement and pension plans, older women being "let go" before they can fulfill the requirements of receiving their pension, and of being fired or down-sized with little or no notice. It scares them. Will they be next?
This isn't paranoia. It's what we see in the marketplace every week.
The women I'm lucky enough to meet have a dream in their hearts of starting and growing a business that will eventually support and sustain them. It's not that they necessarily want to quit their current position... they want options. On their terms.
Here's the truth: You can build a successful, profitable, and fulfilling business today with only a few requirements:
- Computer and internet service
- Drive and willingness to work
- A blueprint to follow
- A clear understanding of what you offer and who is laying awake at night, praying for the answer you provide.
You don't need a degree. You don't need someone to anoint you as "worthy". You need to be willing to roll up your sleeves and work... even when it's hard and not any fun. You need to be persistent and keep working, even when you don't see results. You need to believe in yourself and find others who believe in you, too.
Yes, a little cash to outsource some activities will get you there faster, but it's not necessary. Some ideas, no matter how much money you throw at them, are poor choices. The best model is to find someone who is successful at what you want to do and follow what they do. Invest in yourself and have a sense of humor over the mistakes you make. It's all part of the adventure.
Starting and growing a successful business is one of the most effective strategies to take control of your life and begin living it on your terms. Consider it as "building the safety net" underneath the trapeze.
If you have a dream in your heart, I believe that it was put there because you have the ability, talent, and heart to make it happen. Are you ready?
