This is a very social time of year - lots of holiday parties, business gatherings, and time spent with the family. If you own a business, you will probably be asked over and over again, "How is business?"

The second choice will yield more opportunities for conversation and introductions when you actually know who you want to meet. In other words, do your homework first so you are prepared to answer the question "who" and then follow up with the "why" if you are asked.
