Overwhelm is a great adversary. It fuels guilt over not doing enough or distracts us from doing the right things. It drains our energy. It holds us back from being as productive, effective, and efficient as we know we could be. But I have a solution...
It's a 15-minute timer. Years ago, I discovered that if I blocked out an hour of time to devote to a task, soon the "guilt that I wasn't doing something else" would creep it. I would become distracted and even though I'd set the hour aside, I just wasn't accomplishing much.
But it is different when I set my timer for 15 minutes. In this brief amount of time, I find I am extremely focused, effective, and get more done than I did in the hour time frame. It's much easier to carve out several 15-minute blocks throughout the day than big blocks of 1 hour or more.
My entire business success is built upon this 15-minute solution! This is how I write my talks, email sequences, marketing and sales letters, social media activities, blog posts, etc.
What is the big activity you need to complete first? Write it down, then break it down into smaller sub-goals. Set your timer and work on the first one until the timer goes off. Don't look at your phone if it rings, etc. Put on your blinders and be 100% present in the activity. After the timer goes off, reflect on what you accomplished. Did this small success motivate you to reset your timer and either complete the first task or tackle the next one?
15 minute strategies really work. Try it for a week and then analyze your progress. I think you'll be amazed and thrilled at what you've been able to accomplish! Drop me a comment and share your experience - we'd love to hear all about it!
PS This works really well with kids, too: homework, cleaning their room, etc. 🙂
