Choosing the right speaking coach or mentor can be a tricky business. To choose the person best for you, you need to look through the marketing hype and focus on finding one that is experienced and has a proven track record of success as the type of speaker you want to be.
Here are 4 areas to review before choosing a coach or mentor to help you with the speaking part of your business:
- What is their area of expertise? As we know, "one size fits all" does not fit everyone. Are you starting out and looking at speaking gigs as a lead generator? Does the coach or mentor in question have a system to help convert those leads into customers or clients? Are you looking to build experience and testimonials as you become a better speaker so that you can move into bigger venues and events that pay a speaker's fee? Are you paying for a "name" or for great coaching and training?
- Are they relevant? Is the person in tune with what's happening in today's market place? How current is the program they teach? If it's updated, how did they obtain the information to update the course?
- Does their program and coaching fit your schedule, needs, and budget? If you like personal, one-on-one conversations, want someone to roll up their sleeves and work with you rather than just telling you what to do, if you want just the puzzle pieces and picture to put it together yourself or someone to move you through the process from start to finish, sift through and find the programs that meet your needs and budget.
- Are they approachable and inspire you? This is someone you will be sharing your dreams and ambitions with! Can you comfortably talk to the person, ask questions when concerned or confused, and laugh together? Do they inspire you and help you move forward with positive feedback? In your gut, do you feel this is the right person for you?
I've hired a number of coaches over the years. I've learned what to look for and what to avoid.
