I strongly disagree.
Think for a minute about how you feel when a speaker switches from sharing content to selling. For most of us, it's uncomfortable. And if it's uncomfortable to be in the audience when that happens, we will also be uncomfortable when we attempt it ourselves.
I tried this for the first couple of years as a speaker. And to be honest, I was going broke fast. I didn't get it - I watched other "big-name" people do it and with success, so why couldn't I? A big-name was speaking at a conference was attending. I decided to really pay attention to the speaker and audience during this "sales mode".
There was a notable difference in the speaker when he transitioned from "helping" to "selling". His voice, posture, and energy changed.
There was a notable difference in the audience, as well. Some paid attention, many pulled out their phones to check messages, some chatted and began gathering their things to take with them for lunch, and about 1/4 of the audience got up and walked out.
Ummm... very interesting.

And that's when I started making good money - $6,000-$8,000 from every speaking gig that had at least 40 of my ideal prospects in it and I spoke for 20-40 minutes. It worked over and over again. Predictable results and income WITHOUT selling from the stage.
