I see too many people with untapped potential. I see too many experts holding back because they are scared. I see a many great people stuck in small mindsets because they are worried about what others think of them and their BIG ideas.
The SMALL opinions of others are stopping you from becoming your BIG SELF. Do not let this stop you from living a big life. (Craig Ballentyne)
Millions of people are going to work today, sad that their weekend has come to an end. They dream of finding a way to build a life they want and love... to "follow their passion".
While that sounds great in theory, this advice has led thousands to quit their jobs and risk everything they own, only to end up broke and frustrated.
Let's examine people who want to be highly-paid speakers. This is their passion - they love the adrenaline rush of being on the stage, of sharing their thoughts, and the light in the eyes of audience members when they "get" the message. They start off speaking for no fee and dream of getting paid thousands to deliver their message. Sound familiar?
Here's the shocking truth: 31 out of 32 people fail the first year launching a speaking career. Bryan Caplovitz, founder of SpeakerMatch (the world's largest speakers bureau) shared these statistics with me.
Many of the 31 who fail are great speakers. I believe they fail because they don't understand the "business" of speaking. The "business" of speaking is a business model that is systematic in collecting contact info from the audience, having engaging offers, and a strategic follow-up system that generates predictable income. Speakers with a developed "business" create their own opportunities. They do not wait - and hope - for audience members to call them.
With over 7,000 speaking opportunities every day in the US, there is an audience hoping to hear your message. They are willing to spend money to get the results you promise. Many speaking gigs don't allow you to "pitch" or "sell" to their audience. You are there to deliver great content. Without an effective "speaking business", you are doing yourself, and them, a disservice. Now that you've made them aware of what solutions and results are possible, you leave them unsatisfied because you haven't told them how to get it from YOU! So what do many of them do? They buy from your competitor!
Many of the people who schedule a free 30-minute consultation with me don't understand that the BIG money from speaking gigs is not on the front end! It's in the follow-up! Yes, there are speakers who command huge amounts of money to speak. But they all started where you are.
Here's what I recommend:
- Have a great message that engages your audience
- Have a specific offer
- Create an environment where audience members ask you to follow up with them
- Develop a follow-up system that shares great content, has specific offers, and persuades the reader to buy.
The "business" of speaking allows you to generate predictable income from each speaking gig. The automated process makes it easy to feed in the names of people from the audience who want more. Your follow-up system leads them to buy when they are ready to buy. And because it's automated, you can spend more time speaking, marketing, working with customers, and with your family.
Successful speakers rely on more than just their time on the stage... they rely on their automated and strategic systems to build relationships, deliver great content, and show the reader what to do next in order to solve their problem.
They rely on their "speaking business" to do the heavy work and generate sales and profits.
